On the Hill
La Chapelle Notre-Dame du Haut at Ronchamp is almost a mandatory stop for anyone who has studied or loved architecture. The way light and matter speak to each other leaves you speechless. The sacred nature of the place communicates itself, without mediation. At first, photographing feels impossible. And even more unthinkable to frame it whole, the way you would in a book. After simply being there, I started photographing, almost instinctively, the marks this architecture was leaving in me. The moment when matter stops being matter. A curve that becomes tension. A wall that becomes silence. On The Hill is not an architectural reportage. It does not represent the building. It represents the fragments, the angles, the surfaces that keep existing somewhere, even after you have walked down the hill.
